6th Forensic Linguistics Short Course

The 6th FLsc will be an in-person event located at Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, Germany. Düsseldorf is the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most densely populated state, and home to historic buildings, a rich city culture, and one of Europe’s biggest Japan towns.

As in previous years, we invite students (Bachelor’s and Master’s) as well as graduate students, postdocs and more senior researchers from Linguistics (and its sub-disciplines), Phonetics and Phonology, Law/Legal Studies, and related fields to apply for this international interdisciplinary program. All sessions will be conducted in English.

The FLsc is taught by Dr Isabel Picornell and Dr Krzysztof Kredens and will take place on 3 – 6 September 2024. For the first time, the FLsc will span four instead of three days, as we want to give participants the chance to practice what they have learnt in more detail. This year’s programme will most probably focus on:

  • Disputed meanings (indeterminacy in language; threats, malicious communications and defamation)
  • Authorship analysis (profiling; theoretical foundations; casework examples and methods; faked contexts; native language identification; suicide notes)
  • Guided case study (analysis and presentation of findings)

We will update the programme as soon as possible.

Applications are open from 6 April 2024 to 31 May 2024 (midnight, GMT -12; i.e. applications are open as long as it is 31 May anywhere in the world). Notifications of acceptance will be sent in the first week of June 2024. If there are any questions regarding applications, please ask the coordinators via our contact form here.

Participation Fee

Our association and the FLsc work on a strict non-profit basis, that is all participation fees are used to pay the FLsc’s costs. Due to inflation, the fee is a little higher than in previous years, but we are trying to obtain external funding. Please note that the final fee might be lower, but it will under no circumstance increase:

The participation fee is 450 Euro.

Payment Modalities

Deadline for fee payment is 03 August 2024. If you cannot afford to pay the total fee at once, please contact the coordination team for payment by instalments. Payment is only possible via wire transfer. The FLsc fee covers the costs for course rooms, snacks and drinks, lunch, the payment of our two lecturers, and the maintenance of our website. Our fees are calculated without a profit margin, the FLsc is a non-profit event.

If you cannot attend the summer school, you may cancel your participation until 03 August 2024. Up until this deadline, no fee has to be paid. In case your fee is already paid, you will get back the entire amount paid. However, if you cancel afterwards or do not show up, you are expected to pay the full fee.
