5th Forensic Linguistics Short Course

The 5th FLsc will be an in-person event located at Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, Germany. Düsseldorf is the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most densely populated state, and home to historic buildings, a rich city culture, and one of Europe’s biggest Japantowns.

As in previous years, we invite students (Bachelor’s and Master’s) as well as graduate students, postdocs and more senior researchers from Linguistics (and its sub-disciplines), Phonetics and Phonology, Law/Legal Studies, and related fields to apply for this international interdisciplinary program. All sessions will be conducted in English.

The FLsc is taught by Dr Isabel Picornell and Dr Annina Heini and will take place on 5 – 7 September 2023. This year’s programme focuses on:

  • Disputed meanings (indeterminacy in language; threats, malicious communications and defamation)
  • Authorship analysis (profiling; theoretical foundations; casework examples and methods; faked contexts; native language identification; suicide notes)
  • Guided case study (analysis and presentation of findings)

Applications were open from 1 February 2023 to 16 April 2023 (midnight, GMT -12; i.e. applications were open as long as it was 16 April anywhere in the world). Notifications of acceptance were sent in the first week of May 2023. If there are any questions regarding applications, please ask the coordinators via our contact form here.
