Düsseldorf
Düsseldorf is the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most densely populated state. With roughly 620,000 inhabitants, it is North Rhine-Westphalia’s second-largest city, surpassed only by its nearby rival, Cologne (‘Köln’).
Düsseldorf boasts many attractions, ranging from a historical old town to one of Europe’s poshest shopping streets and unique architectural landmarks. The city is also home to over 10,000 residents of Japanese origin, making it one of the largest Japanese communities outside Japan. Near Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof (main station), the Japanese influence is evident with signs in both German and Japanese, along with Japanese supermarkets, restaurants, and other stores. The city also features a Buddhist temple.
Düsseldorf can be comfortably reached by train and plane.
by Train
Düsseldorf main station is called ‘Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof.’ From here, trains depart to other major German cities as well as to the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, and France.
Both Düsseldorf Airport (DUS) and Cologne/Bonn Airport (CGN) are easily accessible by train from Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof. Frankfurt Airport (FRA) can be reached via high-speed rail.
by Plane
Flying to Düsseldorf is straightforward, as the city has its own airport (DUS). If your departure location does not offer direct flights to DUS, consider flying into Cologne/Bonn Airport (CGN) or Frankfurt Airport (FRA) instead.
From CGN, take any of the regional trains (abbreviated RE or S) to Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof. From FRA, most travelers take a high-speed train (called ‘ICE’) to reach Düsseldorf.
Together, we will explore Düsseldorf’s old town after the classes on March 19. The tour is free of charge; however, any snacks and beverages purchased along the way are not included. Participation is optional.
We will head to Düsseldorf’s old town right after the final session of the day. Since we will be taking the tram, please ensure you have a valid ticket.
Food & Beverages
During the official hours of the FLsc, snacks and beverages will be provided. Among other things, the following snacks and beverages can be expected:
Snacks:
• fruit (apples, bananas, etc.)
• biscuits/cookies (including vegan options)
• sweet pastries
Beverages:
• water (carbonated and non-carbonated)
• apple spritzer (i.e. apple juice with carbonated water)
• coffee (including vegan milk options)
• tea
All FLsc participants will have lunch at the university. This year, we will eat directly at the venue, so no long walks between course rooms and lunch are necessary. All food served during lunch is vegan. Lunch is fully included in the participation fee.
March 17: Potato and vegetable stir-fry with vegan herb dip
March 18: Hokkaido pumpkin cream soup with baguette
March 19: Penne with sun-dried tomatoes and fresh arugula
March 20: Chili sin carne with baguette & vegan herb dip
We will have our spring school dinner on March 18 at 19:00 at the restaurant “Wilma Wunder”. It is located at Martin-Luther-Platz 27, 40212 Düsseldorf, here. Feel free to have a look at their menu – there are vegetarian and vegan options available.
Please note that the dinner is not covered by the participation fee.
Poster Session
In general, poster sessions are intended to provide presenters with an informal platform to discuss their research with colleagues who share an interest in their research. The purpose of posters is to visually engage viewers, presenting enough information for them to grasp the methods, results, and significance of the research, while also fostering conversation and networking among participants.
The FLsc poster session encourages participants to showcase their research in a relaxed and less formal manner. Unlike traditional formats where abstract submissions undergo peer-review, we welcome all participants to present their work. This approach not only promotes their research but also serves as a valuable training opportunity, particularly beneficial for young researchers.
The FLsc poster session will take place in the afternoon of March 18.
We invite posters covering the following research areas:
- Linguistics, Phonetics, Phonology
- Law, Legal Studies
- Related fields, e.g. Cognitive Science
The poster session is open to the public, i.e. students and researchers of the university may visit. This is a great opportunity to get feedback on your work by researchers of your own and related fields.
Also: The best poster will receive a price!
The layout of your poster is completely up to you. There are many ways to design a good poster; therefore, we do not want to restrict you in any way (you can find a great number of layout tips and tricks online). Also, which size you make your poster is up to you as well.
Public Tansport
Most public transport in Germany requires you to purchase a valid ticket before boarding. Please keep this in mind when using public transport – the regular fine is €60.
For travels in Düsseldorf and its surroundings, we recommend using eezy.nrw. eezy is the electronic fare that is calculated simply by your journey. It allows you to start your bus and train journey spontaneously and pay directly with your smartphone. How does it work? A check-in and check-out system calculates the fare based on the shortest distance between the start and destination stops.
Social Gathering
On the day of arrival – 16 March 2026 – there will be an open social gathering that you can attend. It is a nice opportunity to get to know some of the other participants, as well as the lecturers and coordinators of the FLsc.
We will meet at 5pm at the Bertha-von-Suttner-Platz, which is located directly behind Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof (main station), here. From there, we will decide on whether we want to drink or also eat something, and then look for a nice place to do so. You can leave at any time.
