The Statistics for Linguistics workshop initially started as a satellite event to the Forensic Linguistics Short Course. When the Diversity in Linguistics association was founded, it was decided to make the workshop a recurring standalone event. Previously, the workshop took place as a weekly tutorial and as part of an international summer school.
The Statistics for Linguistics workshop introduces general ideas and methods of statistics. Topics discussed include data visualization and inferential statistical methods, e.g. linear regression and linear mixed effects models. In the applied half of this course, participants will use R, a free software environment for statistical computing, and RStudio in hands-on exercises covering all theoretical aspects under discussion. Previous knowledge of the R programming language is not required. Previous knowledge of statistics is required for some editions of the workshop.
